Jun. 12th, 2009 07:59 pmOne day my family are going to be the end of me. I know it.
Anyway. Yesterday James went to see the doctor assigned by the insurance company The doctor was part of a private clinic. You should have seen the place, it was on a residential street with huge houses and mature trees lining the road. The clinic itself was very swish, it even had free hot drinks, I'm surprised they let us in the door tbh. But they did and now it's just a case of waiting.
Have another five thing list. This one from
mahoni, who may not have known me for long, but sure knows what I like.
Mikey/Frank -- ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
If you want actual words. Oh man, I don't know. I just love the pairing beyond reason. I'm always a little hesitant about talking about why pairings work because it's so easy to slip into crazy tinhat land, but I'm going to anyway. I like that they're such good friends and have been for a long time, and that they lived together -- which yes, means it's time for my oh so familiar moan. Why are they not thousands of stories dealing with Mikey and Frank living together? Fail fandom, fail! They compliment each other well and have enough similarities and differences to make things interesting.
sperrywink and I have a running joke about Mikey, Frank and the internet. How Mikey keeps telling Frank to post something at twitter or the MCR site then throws up his hands in exasperation when Frank posts yet another angry post. This is in addition to the long-running universe where Mikey and Alica, Frank and Jamia live next door to one another and are involved with a foursome, with dogs and cats running everywhere and lots of sexin up. Really, you're lucky that most of this stuff stays in email.
I love the idea of them quietly doing their own thing out of the spotlight, secure in not needing to flaunt things to the world. On a purely shallow level, they look damn hot together and always have, from bird's nest and dreads to now with bearded Frank and smiley Mikey.
AUs. -- I really like reading and writing AUs. World building is such a fun thing to do. I love letting my imagination go free and ask myself things like, what if Bob was in space? Or what happens if JC's music was a physical thing? I'm always amazed at the pure amount of AUs people can think up, and actually make work. Which is another thing, a good AU is one where the characters are actually recognisable despite being in another setting. I've read many that are pretty much original fic with bandom/pop/insert fandom here names tacked on, which isn't good at all. When I write AU I remind myself it may be an alternative universe but they're not alternative characters. Obviously some things will change depending on situation and location, for example, the Brendon who lives at Clan House isn't exactly the same as the Brendon who's in Panic. But he still has to be recognisable as Brendon.
I love all kinds of AUs. Real world and fantasy and everything in-between. There's nothing too insane that I wouldn't read and probably enjoy. Really, it comes down to that 'what if?' What if Mikey was a magical unicorn herder? What if Spencer captained a fishing boat? What if Chris liked to fuck motorbikes? I want to ask myself those questions and think of the answers, AUs let me do that.
H/C -- My favourite and it always has been. When I was devouring Hardy Boys books as a kidlet the pages would fall open at the parts where Joe was in a motorbike crash or Frank got bashed over the head. My first sort of fanfic was a story where Frank and Joe were trapped in a cabin and there was a broken ankle and daring escape involved.
I enjoy every kind of hurt from colds and sprained ankles to the really fucked-up stuff. Dark and horrible situations where people are fighting for their lives and on the verge of death or in the hands of a twisted madman. I like bruises and breaks and cuts. Fevers and nausea and coughs. Mental angst, physical pain, the lot. But, the comfort is important too. The aftermath where there's hugs and people being taken care and protected from the world.
I like the idea of someone being there with soup or a hug or just sitting in the middle of night when they need someone. I like seeing people brought to their knees, and then get back up, on their own and with the help of their family and friends. To me, h/c is about so many things, strength, resilience, endurance, love, affection, care. Just being there I guess.
Crossovers -- are fun. It's like AUs in a way, thinking of ways to get people or worlds to interact. I've written a lot of bandom/popslash, and that's always a blast. Working out realistic ways for people to meet, and it also allows me to get my favourite people together, even if the resulting pairing would be a disaster. Chris/Mikey anyone? It has disaster written all over it. They'd get along I'm sure, but their lifestyles are very different now. And oh my god, now I've been sitting thinking about that for far too long. See, this is why crossovers can be fun, because they make you think.
Crossing rps and media fandoms is fun too. Ryan as a Sentinel, Panic in CSI, Pete travelling the universe with Captain Jack. ( that would be my Mikey/Pete, where Pete visits all the different Mikey's in time. Young to old ) Bob in the ATF. He can sit next to Chris and be all scowly silent. OH! MCR ATF team. That would be interesting to think about. Also, getting very complex with it being a crossover of an AU of an actual show.
See, thoughts like those are why I love crossovers so much.
Science fiction -- I'm a long time trekker. I've done the conventions, love Voyager beyond reason. Get thrilled at Farscape, Andromeda, Space Above and Beyond, original BSG, the list goes on. It's just, space, I'm fascinated by the galaxies and the concept of exploring. I believe there's something out there, so these shows that run with that? Meeting new races and planets. They give me glee.
Also, science fiction tends to be shiny. Space ships and gadgets. Robots, halograms, replicators, there's all this stuff, inventions that may happen or not, but it doesn't matter because they could. A long standing joke in my family was I didn't like any shows that were set below the stars, which isn't true now, but come on. How can you not love the stars?
This clip of MCR congratulating Summersonic was all over my flist this morning, but I'm putting it here too. Because it made me happy today.

Date: 2009-06-12 07:15 pm (UTC)& THAT VID. I can't stop watching it! Mikey starting it off with that waveeeeeee (and that chin lift thing)! Frank and his hair/beard! Ray and the wolverine claws! Gerard and how I'll never get over the fact that he speaks out of the corner of his mouth and of course Stony!Silent!Bob

Date: 2009-06-12 07:30 pm (UTC)Oh my god! I want that so badly! IT WOULD BE AWESOME! They could be space ship cadets who were assigned the same room and they spend months in this tiny space, sharing holo novels, their stuff everywhere, Frank in the top bunk, hanging over the side as he talks to Mikey who's in the bottom bunk, in his foxy uniform, half listening as he sends a vid to Gerard who's back on earth.
Then they could become actual pilots, and there is an attack with explosions and danger and one of them ends up in the med unit, the other sitting waiting until he wakes up.
The vid is a thing of joy! Mikey's wave! Ray's Wolverine claw! Frank's beard! Yes! Gerard and his needing to talk and stony-faced Bob.
I love them so much!

Date: 2009-06-12 07:48 pm (UTC)YYYYYYYY! we'd need to throw in a bit of jealousy (in the form of pete) because i'm a sucker for that theme ;) and i love the idea that gees stuck on earth and sending mikey vids *--*

Date: 2009-06-12 08:10 pm (UTC)Gee and Mikey would send vids daily for sure.
Mikey, sitting on his bunk, Frank's feet occasionally swiging into view.
Hey, Gee. We flew solo for the first time today, it was awesome!
Frank, twisting around so his head is in shot. "Mikey nearly hit an asteroid!"
Mikey: "It was only a small one, no harm no foul. It could have happened to anyone."
Frank, grinning. "Yeah, if they're blind."
"Mikey, pushing Frank out of shot. "Whatever. Anyway, have to go. Tell mom I'll vid her later and thank Bob for the sweet old skool clips he sent."
Frank, yelling. "Love ya, Gee!"
Mikey, smiling slightly. "Yeah, love you bro. See you soon. Mikey out."

He's still wearing his truck stop hoodie. [wolfshirt!]
Ahem. Yes.
Had we talked about a My Chem ATF team before? I feel like we have...
Oh and this:When I write AU I remind myself it may be an alternative universe but they're not alternative characters. YES.

Date: 2009-06-12 08:00 pm (UTC)Mikey is so happy, and Ray! With his Wolverine claw <3 And of course Gerard and Frank who are both delightful. But not as much as Bob with all his lurky truck-stop hoodie wearing ways.
Every single one of them need a million hearts to show how much glee they bring me.
I think we have talked a MCR ATF team, it's certainly something we would chatter about, because it's the perfect idea. Especially the Bob and Chris thing.
And a million hearts for you too. <333333. There's a few of them.

I'm with ya there. It's kinda crazy, really, how happy they make me.
Bob and Chris in the same building makes me snort laughter.
I admit it's a little confusing, as Hana and I actually started plotting out a MCR/Mag 7 crossover, so I couldn't remember what you and I've discussed. I know we've talked CSI/MCR at length...
Hearts for me! Woot! Funny, I've got a SLEW of 'em for you too. They tend to get stuck in my eyes though. :D <3333333

I don't think we've talked at length, in passing more likely. Because it makes so much sense! Also, you plotting it out makes me grin like crazy!

Mag 7 is the fandom that drew Hana and I together, so little surprise that we filter new fandoms through it.
Let's see...

To say JD Dunne started high school with a chip on his shoulder would be something of a vast understatement. He hadn't had the easiest of childhoods - his mom did her best, but it was rough taking care of the two of them on her wages, and they spent much of his childhood barely scraping by. To make matters worse, JD was a small kid, always looked younger than his actual age - paired with his thrift store clothes and he pretty much had a target painted on his back from the first moment he stepped into a schoolyard. He stuck up for himself, but bullies tended to roam in packs in South Boston and seemed to get perverse glee in watching him fly of the handle. By the time he got to high school the constant simmering rage was well-seated in JD. Given the opportunity - or if his tormentors finally pushed him to too far - JD would have no problem walking into the cafeteria with a shotgun and opening fire on his classmates.
Luckily he wasn't the only person who realized this.
The music teacher was pretty new to the area, but he'd grown up in the city and *his* high school had been rough, with the gangs and the drugs and all. He recognized exactly how close JD was to the breaking point. So he did what someone had done for him well over a decade ago.
He put a guitar in JD's hands and pointed him towards punk rock.
It worked like a charm.
The bullies were still there, but music carved him breathing room. And it was pretty easy, finding people interested in playing. Finding people who were *serious* about forming a band, practicing and playing shows - and who didn't outright suck - was another story entirely. But JD was determined and persistent, and when he finally graduated from high school, he walked out of the auditorium, kissed his mom, handed her his diploma case, cap and gown, and climbed directly into his drummer's shitty ass van and hit the road for a East Coast tour.
They weren't awesome - they were solid at best- but JD was very good at talking to club owners, so they spent the summer playing in dives up and down the coast. They got as far south as Baltimore, ended up returning to the City over and over again, like scrawny punk-ass homing pigeons. It only makes sense - the hardcore scene in New York kicked ass and it was easy, finding people to crash with there. When the van broke down outside of a gig there in mid-August, JD took it as a sign and focused his efforts on settling in there. Besides, the constant lack of privacy from living in a van was taking its toll on the four of them; trading touring for gigging seemed like the best way to keep the band from imploding.
This is why JD is in the City on September 11th.

Yay, new video!
Watched it six times in a row - first to listen what they're saying, and then to stare at each of them, lol.
Bob - grumpy motionless face.
Mikey - wow, so much emotions this time.
Gee - tugging his lip all the time. Nervous much?
Frankie - giggles! And his epic beard, still have to use to it, lol.
Ray - Wolverine claws :D Hello, dorkiness.

the pages would fall open at the parts where Joe was in a motorbike crash or Frank got bashed over the head. My first sort of fanfic was a story where Frank and Joe were trapped in a cabin and there was a broken ankle and daring escape involved.
Hah! Yeah, that's how my books were too.
I didn't read very many Hardy Boys books, I think because when I discovered them I was into SF/F, but the funny thing is that I clearly remember one of the ones I did read...and it's specifically because of a scene where something terrible happens to Joe. He almost DIES! They're at, like, NASA or someplace like that, and Joe gets strapped into a...what are those things called, they spin around and mimic increased gravity, to give astronauts a chance to experience what it will feel like when they're shot into space? I don't remember how he got into the thing, but someone SABOTAGED it and it kept going FASTER and Frank couldn't get it to STOP omg, and when they finally got it stopped Joe was UNCONCSIOUS and Frank was SO WORRIED.
Dude, seriously. I read that part a billion times.
Also? My first piece of fanfiction was (don't laugh at me, I was like thirteen or something) a Duran Duran RPF AU in which there was lots of magic and somebody got hurt REALLY REALLY BAD in the third paragraph and had to be taken care of by his friends. \o?
a crossover of an AU of an actual show
Haha! That might be a little tricky. Though, I don't know -- the ATF AU was pretty straightforward, I thought. I think it would probably be easy enough to drop MCR into the universe. Well. Easy until suddenly you have a cast of twelve characters (possibly more, if Mary or Rain or any of the other secondary M7 characters or Brian or Worm or any of the MCR wives showed up)...
Wow. I haven't thought about M7 in ages. Suddenly there are a lot of character interactions I'm dying to see. Chris and Gerard having to work together (Gerard would be both terrified and massively impressed by Chris; Chris would appreciate Gerard's work ethic but...okay, the kid is just weird). Frank and JD would drive everyone fucking crazy.
If it was set pre-wives, Buck thinking that Mikey needs help getting laid would be pretty funny. He'd take him out to help him score a chick, and the next morning would be all depressed because Mikey got eleventy billion more offers than Buck did without even trying. From girls AND guys.
I have no idea if it would even make for an interesting story, but, Bob and Ezra. Doing...something. Anything. Ezra would have trouble beating Bob at poker, anyway, what with Bob sort of having 'poker face' as his default expression...
Yeah, hi, I have no idea where all of that came from. Moving on!
It's just, space, I'm fascinated by the galaxies and the concept of exploring
YES! <3333
(Voyager: dude, I had such a thing for Harry Kim. I was so sad when he got approximately 3 episodes devoted to him during the entire run of the series. :P)

Date: 2009-06-13 08:55 am (UTC)Yes! I find it hard to actually write down why I like certain pairings because something just pings as right. Which is the case here, along with the fact they so obviously adore each other.
I don't remember how he got into the thing, but someone SABOTAGED it and it kept going FASTER and Frank couldn't get it to STOP omg, and when they finally got it stopped Joe was UNCONCSIOUS and Frank was SO WORRIED.
OMG! I have read that! I started off reading the old stories then the case files came along and they pushed up the danger levels with stuff like that. I mean, trapped and unconscious and yes, nearly dead!
Also? My first piece of fanfiction was (don't laugh at me, I was like thirteen or something) a Duran Duran RPF AU in which there was lots of magic and somebody got hurt REALLY REALLY BAD in the third paragraph and had to be taken care of by his friends. \o?
I wouldn't laugh at that at all! I do want to know who was hurt. Simon, Nick, John? Inquiring minds want to know.
Easy until suddenly you have a cast of twelve characters (possibly more, if Mary or Rain or any of the other secondary M7 characters or Brian or Worm or any of the MCR wives showed up)...,
Man, that story is now looking epic length, even if the core characters were stuck to it's still a heck of a lot of them.
The thought of Chris and Gerard interacting is making me laugh so much. At least they could bond over wearing black. And yes, Frank and JD. So much energy in one little space.
He'd take him out to help him score a chick, and the next morning would be all depressed because Mikey got eleventy billion more offers than Buck did without even trying. From girls AND guys.
Eeeeee! I can see this so easily! Buck would be so perplexed.
I don't care what Ezra and Bob would be doing, it would keep me entertained. Bob would have no time for Ezra's fancy ways, and ahahahaha, Ezra would be horrified at the constant black hoodies.
That would excellent to think about. Thank you!
Harry Kim would an excellent character who was woefully underused. Still, The Chute remains one of my most favourite episodes in a show ever.

Date: 2009-06-13 03:31 pm (UTC)Haha! Mostly John. I think Simon might have gotten injured trying to help him? Simon got injured at some point, at any rate. (Nick was the faily magician who had no confidence in his abilities but had to Be Brave And Try Hard to help his friends! Andy was the friend who betrayed them because he was misguided, but he felt bad later and helped them. ...how dorktastic is it that I even remember this stuff? I remember the notebook I wrote it in, too -- it had a textured silver cover and was wide-ruled. Hee.)
Bob would have no time for Ezra's fancy ways, and ahahahaha, Ezra would be horrified at the constant black hoodies.
!!!! Oh dude! What if they had to do some *handwave* undercover-y thing together -- because Ezra is good at undercover, and Bob knows some Important Thing that means he has to go with. They have to go to, like, a party at a rich dude's house or something, and Ezra is all, "Have you anything, anything at all in your wardrobe, that would be appropriate to wear?" and Bob would be all, "Dunno. Not really. Guess I could rent a suit or something." And Ezra would...well, first he'd have to sit down and have a drink and maybe cry a little. But then he'd get up and drag Bob off shopping. Bob's friends would not have high expectations of the outcome of the shopping trip, because they know Bob. Ezra's friends would not be worried about it at all, because they know Ezra.
Bob would leave with Ezra looking like this (http://pics.livejournal.com/mahoni/pic/0004gdy8). He'd come back looking like this (http://pics.livejournal.com/mahoni/pic/0004hw06). (He would also probably glare at everybody and say "Shut. Up." before anyone even had a chance to say anything.)
The Chute remains one of my most favourite episodes in a show ever
YES!! I loved that episode like WHOA!
no subject
Date: 2009-06-13 07:08 pm (UTC)That is just. Wow. I love that so much, and I don't think it's dorktastic at all! This is important history!
Your brain! Your ideas about Bob and Ezra! I'm all *flails*
And Ezra would...well, first he'd have to sit down and have a drink and maybe cry a little.
YES! That! Bob's utter lack of caring about what he wears would be so alien to Ezra, and then shopping together! I can't stop using exclamation marks because each time I think about it I go !!!!!!
And the picture choices are just perfect! Oh Bob! Oh Ezra!
no subject
Date: 2009-06-13 07:29 pm (UTC)HEEE. Poor Ezra. The first time they meet MCR, Bob would be wearing that terrible hoodie with the eagle and wolf etc on it; and Vin would say, "Hey, cool hoodie," and Bob would say, "oh, thanks! It's my favorite. I have, like, four of them, so I can wear it every day," and Ezra would say, "*facepalm* Oh god. Kill me now."

[And hahahaha... now I'm thinking about how one could incorporate Arcadia and Power Station into a magical AU. I really think Ryan Ross's Rose Vest is to blame for this one - it reminds me of the liner art for 'So Red the Rose', of course.]

Date: 2009-06-13 07:33 pm (UTC)I had problems figuring out what to do with Roger. He was sort of wandering around the periphery of the story being a ~shy peasant~ with some sort of ~secret~ that I hadn't figured out yet.
Ryan Ross = Secret Love Child of Arcadia, y/y???

Date: 2009-06-13 02:32 pm (UTC)When you put it like that I can ALMOST see the attraction of h/c. Almost. I like it when it's part of a general action/adventure/drama setup but when it's the only thing the story is about I quickly get bored. In general I think I'm pretty neutral on it, I neither like nor dislike it.
Awwww, boys!! Bob is reaching new heights of grumpiness, it's awesome! And Ray is such a dork playing with his claw! And Mikey's lame wave! And tiny, chubby, librarian/history teacher Frank!! Gerard is unusually quiet, was he too busy being a father inside his head?

Date: 2009-06-13 04:48 pm (UTC)I suspect neutral is the way lots of people approach h/c. It's there in a lot of stories, but not as a main theme, so people don't really pay it that much attention. While I love h/c in any form, in action adventure stories it's always good. There needs to be more of them.
I saw that clip and was so happy! There's so much to look at. The claw. The wave. The beard. Gerard being remarkably quiet and especially Bob. Go your grumpy self Bob!

Your fanfic sounds awesome, even now. I'm obviously shameless.

Date: 2009-06-15 11:51 am (UTC)Funny thing with AU is that I did read some when I was in TS but the fandom that really made me fall for it was SPNRPS; I suddenly realised that I loved Aus. Then I got into bandom and just, yeah, my love for AU, it knows no bounds :-) Incidentally, I think RPS (SPN and Bandom) has some of the best AUs around
H/C! Such a lovely, lovely genre too; what would we do without it, right? I most certainly agree with your reply - no surprise here!

Date: 2009-06-15 03:05 pm (UTC)RPS has amazing AUs. Which is strange because you'd think it would be just as easy to turn Jim into say, a space pilot, than it is to turn Richard into one. Not that I'd try, I don't want to be chased with torches by old skool TS fans *g*
H/C. Best thing in the world!
