turps: (Bob is a star (samelthecamel))

One day my family are going to be the end of me. I know it.

Anyway. Yesterday James went to see the doctor assigned by the insurance company The doctor was part of a private clinic. You should have seen the place, it was on a residential street with huge houses and mature trees lining the road. The clinic itself was very swish, it even had free hot drinks, I'm surprised they let us in the door tbh. But they did and now it's just a case of waiting.

Have another five thing list. This one from [livejournal.com profile] mahoni, who may not have known me for long, but sure knows what I like.

Mikey/Frank -- ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

If you want actual words. Oh man, I don't know. I just love the pairing beyond reason. I'm always a little hesitant about talking about why pairings work because it's so easy to slip into crazy tinhat land, but I'm going to anyway. I like that they're such good friends and have been for a long time, and that they lived together -- which yes, means it's time for my oh so familiar moan. Why are they not thousands of stories dealing with Mikey and Frank living together? Fail fandom, fail! They compliment each other well and have enough similarities and differences to make things interesting. [livejournal.com profile] sperrywink and I have a running joke about Mikey, Frank and the internet. How Mikey keeps telling Frank to post something at twitter or the MCR site then throws up his hands in exasperation when Frank posts yet another angry post. This is in addition to the long-running universe where Mikey and Alica, Frank and Jamia live next door to one another and are involved with a foursome, with dogs and cats running everywhere and lots of sexin up. Really, you're lucky that most of this stuff stays in email.

I love the idea of them quietly doing their own thing out of the spotlight, secure in not needing to flaunt things to the world. On a purely shallow level, they look damn hot together and always have, from bird's nest and dreads to now with bearded Frank and smiley Mikey.

AUs. -- I really like reading and writing AUs. World building is such a fun thing to do. I love letting my imagination go free and ask myself things like, what if Bob was in space? Or what happens if JC's music was a physical thing? I'm always amazed at the pure amount of AUs people can think up, and actually make work. Which is another thing, a good AU is one where the characters are actually recognisable despite being in another setting. I've read many that are pretty much original fic with bandom/pop/insert fandom here names tacked on, which isn't good at all. When I write AU I remind myself it may be an alternative universe but they're not alternative characters. Obviously some things will change depending on situation and location, for example, the Brendon who lives at Clan House isn't exactly the same as the Brendon who's in Panic. But he still has to be recognisable as Brendon.

I love all kinds of AUs. Real world and fantasy and everything in-between. There's nothing too insane that I wouldn't read and probably enjoy. Really, it comes down to that 'what if?' What if Mikey was a magical unicorn herder? What if Spencer captained a fishing boat? What if Chris liked to fuck motorbikes? I want to ask myself those questions and think of the answers, AUs let me do that.

H/C -- My favourite and it always has been. When I was devouring Hardy Boys books as a kidlet the pages would fall open at the parts where Joe was in a motorbike crash or Frank got bashed over the head. My first sort of fanfic was a story where Frank and Joe were trapped in a cabin and there was a broken ankle and daring escape involved.

I enjoy every kind of hurt from colds and sprained ankles to the really fucked-up stuff. Dark and horrible situations where people are fighting for their lives and on the verge of death or in the hands of a twisted madman. I like bruises and breaks and cuts. Fevers and nausea and coughs. Mental angst, physical pain, the lot. But, the comfort is important too. The aftermath where there's hugs and people being taken care and protected from the world.

I like the idea of someone being there with soup or a hug or just sitting in the middle of night when they need someone. I like seeing people brought to their knees, and then get back up, on their own and with the help of their family and friends. To me, h/c is about so many things, strength, resilience, endurance, love, affection, care. Just being there I guess.

Crossovers -- are fun. It's like AUs in a way, thinking of ways to get people or worlds to interact. I've written a lot of bandom/popslash, and that's always a blast. Working out realistic ways for people to meet, and it also allows me to get my favourite people together, even if the resulting pairing would be a disaster. Chris/Mikey anyone? It has disaster written all over it. They'd get along I'm sure, but their lifestyles are very different now. And oh my god, now I've been sitting thinking about that for far too long. See, this is why crossovers can be fun, because they make you think.

Crossing rps and media fandoms is fun too. Ryan as a Sentinel, Panic in CSI, Pete travelling the universe with Captain Jack. ( that would be my Mikey/Pete, where Pete visits all the different Mikey's in time. Young to old ) Bob in the ATF. He can sit next to Chris and be all scowly silent. OH! MCR ATF team. That would be interesting to think about. Also, getting very complex with it being a crossover of an AU of an actual show.

See, thoughts like those are why I love crossovers so much.

Science fiction -- I'm a long time trekker. I've done the conventions, love Voyager beyond reason. Get thrilled at Farscape, Andromeda, Space Above and Beyond, original BSG, the list goes on. It's just, space, I'm fascinated by the galaxies and the concept of exploring. I believe there's something out there, so these shows that run with that? Meeting new races and planets. They give me glee.

Also, science fiction tends to be shiny. Space ships and gadgets. Robots, halograms, replicators, there's all this stuff, inventions that may happen or not, but it doesn't matter because they could. A long standing joke in my family was I didn't like any shows that were set below the stars, which isn't true now, but come on. How can you not love the stars?

This clip of MCR congratulating Summersonic was all over my flist this morning, but I'm putting it here too. Because it made me happy today.
