It was another early start today, which turned out to be a good thing.

James checked online banking and saw someone had withdrawn £300 overnight, many calls to the bank and it seems my card has been cloned at the local supermarket ATM. Money was withdrawn at a town down South and it's only because we were up so early and stopped the cards that they were prevented from clearing out our account this morning.

I've just had to talk to the fraud department and they've opened an investigation, which will take up to 10 days before a result. I just hope they rule it is fraud, they have to, I've never been to that town and my card is still in my purse.

James has talked to the people at Co Op and the police think a card reader was put in the machine. There's surveillance cameras there, whether they'll do any good is another matter.

Gah, that is really sucky :( I had problems with people making charges to my credit card a couple of years ago, and it's so frustrating, because it's like you have to jump through hoops because of other people's crappery. I really hope the bank gets it sorted out soon.

That's it exactly. It's others that commit the crime but you're left talking to multiple people and having to prove you didn't actually withdraw/use the money.

How incredibly annoying! I hope it gets sorted out quickly - I suppose it's good that the cloned card was used somewhere a long way away from you, so it'll be easier to prove it wasn't you. And thank goodness that James caught it before they emptied the account.

I've been told all about cloned cards this morning, and it's scary how easily it can happen. The bank are being really good at investigating, but yeah, them being aware that no way were we in the town and then London is a relief.

So scary and horrible! 300 is nothing to sneeze at. I always hate using my card at gas pumps because they are typical spots for card readers around here.

It's a significant chunk of the mortgage money, so there'll have to be phone calls explaining what that'll be late. So many things to sort out because of someone thinking it's okay to steal.

From what I understand they slip a magnetic card reader in the ATM slot, and set up a camera that picks up the pin number. The ATM where this happened is on the outside of the supermarket which isn't that busy and also has car parking within feet. I suspect they sat there and watched then took their reader when they had numbers.

Oh, crap! That's so good you caught it so early. A friend of mine had her wallet stolen out of her purse while we were out of town together a couple years ago, and the thieves spent thousands of dollars before she got her cards stopped. She got most of it back, but it was such an awful experience.

I'm so glad you caught it before it took your money!! Banks out here don't seem to give a shit most of the time. We have so many people who abuse the 'fraud' claim that our banks have said eff it to most everyone - even real victims of fraud :(

Aaarrghhh! That sucks so much! I hate card frauds like that. Not only do you get robbed of quite a lot of money you also have to deal with all the hassle of proving it wasn't you who did it >:( I hope dealing with the bank and the police won't be too timeconsuming and exhausting. *hugs you a lot*

Whoa dude!! I'm glad you caught it early. Fraud is so rampant nowadays. I remember all of the stories my parents used to tell me when they worked at the fraud department in JP Morgan Chase. Sad. ;-/
