Sep. 20th, 2014 05:22 pmI seem to be catching up on a Saturday lately so why buck that trend?
The weather has been miserable around these parts. I love autumn but instead of crisp temperatures and turning leaves we've had days of fog, mizzly rain and grey skies. I'm starting to forget what sunshine looks like.
It was dad's birthday on Thursday and after what happened at the beginning of the year I was very happy to visit with him and celebrate it. He still has bad and good days, but when we went over he was pottering in the patch of garden outside his bungalow. He's up for a gardening award this week, one run by the local council and I really hope he gets it. He can't manage a full garden now, and in fact doesn't have one apart from that one small bed, but has grown beautiful red sunflowers and gladioli that are stunning to look at. Winning will be a big boost, so fingers crossed for award night.
Kayleigh's split with Kay got a bit nasty and she ended up arguing with mam, too. Though that was inevitable, they argue enough when Kayleigh had her own house never mind living at home, but even so. On one day all it seemed like I was doing was talking on the phone to one or the other of them. She's back now though, but is getting the keys to her own house next Thursday, so all the have to do is survive another week. This house is one she's lived in before, and hated, but since then it's been fully decorated and best of all, her best friend now lives next door. That's a huge plus as it'll be the first time Kayleigh's lived alone and I think she's a bit nervous about doing so.
My brother's partner is moving to her new house this weekend and taking a lot of the furniture. I suspect there may be a fight on to get any spare stuff we have or mam, especially so as when Kayleigh moved out she left all the big stuff behind.
I watched the new Haven and while I still like the show it's lost something for me. Nathan/Duke/Audrey are still my OT3 but it's getting harder to believe in them.
I know I'm probably the only one watching but I also watched new Biggest Loser and was thrilled to see Jessie is one of the new trainers. I love Jessie, he's awesome, and very easy on the eye.
I've also fallen down the Firefly rabbit hole recently, getting into that awesome state of reading a story and spinning off onto another until suddenly you've got multiple new tabs open and are finding it hard to remember what you've been reading. Because it's an old fandom I've been reading on old archives and on LJ instead of A03 and it feels like I'm back in my newbie fan days. All I need to do now is find a Firefly webring and the feeling will be complete.
Now though, bath and Uglies reading time. I'm aware I said the same last week but I'm now nearly at the end of book two. If I keep up this pace I may be at the end of book three next time I post -- and no doubt be about to go in the bath.

Date: 2014-09-20 06:41 pm (UTC)lots of big changes/moving happening with family, huh? ideally Kayleigh will be happy in her new place, away from your mom and near a good friend - that will be good for her while she gets over the breakup.
have fun revisiting Firefly - it's filled with great characters, and if you do stumble across a webring, please let us know immediately *g*

Date: 2014-09-21 07:37 pm (UTC)I'm keeping everything crossed for your dad!
It must be a great relief for all of you that Kayleigh's getting her own place so quickly. And hopefully she'll enjoy living alone too.
*giggles* You're so old school! Are you using
I hope you'd a very enjoyable bath and read!

Date: 2014-09-22 06:01 am (UTC)I hope that Kayleigh will settle into her new place quickly and be able to enjoy it, and that all the exes will get to heal.

Date: 2014-09-22 09:13 am (UTC)If your various family members need more stuff, it would probably be well worth trying the local FreeCycle. I'm (temporarily?) done giving stuff away on mine, but I still get regular posts of asking and offering, and it's amazing what people are happy to give away.
Ah, Firefly! I suspect that if I hadn't been lured into popslash at the crucial time, I'd have been way deeper into the Firefly fanfic. I trust you've seen the show? If not, I can help!

Well, Kayleigh got her keys today and promptly had a breakdown. A variety of things I think, the house is a dump with ill fitting doors, dirty underwear left behind and windows that won't open. Plus, she lived there before and had a bad time with her ex. It was all a big reality slap. I hope she does like living there eventually. Location wise it's perfect.
I did use crack_van! It was a lot of fun to do so, and I kept boggling that a lot of stories were over 10 years old.

Date: 2014-09-25 05:11 pm (UTC)I really do hope she settles, but it's all a bit raw at the moment. She got her keys today and it didn't go well, reality hitting hard.

Date: 2014-09-25 05:15 pm (UTC)FreeCycle is a good idea, we've used it a few times, both giving stuff and asking. You're right, some people are incredibly generous, which is great when you're just setting up.
I have seen Firefly, but just. Syfi was showing an episode a night a few weeks back and I decided it was finally time I actually watched, and then fell in love from the first moment. It's such a great show, but all I have to watch now is Serenity, but I don't want to yet as then it'll be over. Plus, I've seen spoilers so know it'll be sad.

Date: 2014-09-25 05:18 pm (UTC)Yep, it's all go family wise around these parts. Kayleigh got her keys today but sadly on a closer look without the landlady the place is a dump, so I doubt she'll stay long. But it means she can get her cats back, which is great as she's missing them terribly.
I'm having a blast with Firefly, and really must get an icon. Sadly no webring yet, but I did end up on geocities once *g*
