Sep. 1st, 2023 04:05 pmIt was an interesting start to the day yesterday. We headed out for an early walk and then I saw James stop at the corner heading to the garages and sort of huddle in place. Got to him and it turns out the fastening on his leg strap had broken so he was frozen in place and worried about moving.
Thankfully, we were still close to home so I helped him, very slowly, back to the house, found a spare strap and got it changed.
Wednesday we took my MiL to Whitby for the day. The day started very well, we had lunch at Humble Pie, which is our usual place while there. And while it's impossible to be wheeled in due to the very narrow door, my MiL managed the few steps to get to a table.
Had some tasty food and after decided to go look around town, which is where I hit an issue as the place was packed, the streets were crowded, people everywhere and I quickly turned around halfway up one street as the combination of the crowds and cobbles meant I couldn't get the wheelchair any further.
So, we left Whitby earlier than planned but drove home along the coast, stopping at Saltburn to break the journey home a bit and have an ice cream. They have cliff lifts there and they looked like fun, though at £1:80 a journey, I think I'd attempt the walk up first.

We didn't stop long as it got really cold and windy while we were there. It was like it had its own little micro-climate as it had been warm and sunny in Whitby, and was the same at home.
Fannish niece is 21 today, which means it's three years since she ran from home and broke away from the family. As we have her bank details my MiL asked if we would send our niece £50 and she'd give us the money, so we did and asked fannish niece to reply saying she'd got it. But nothing. She hasn't replied to any birthday messages so I guess she's gone to full on ghosting now.

Date: 2023-09-01 05:53 pm (UTC)Too bad you weren't able to enjoy town after your meal. Those lifts look like fun. I think I'd try them just to say I had. *g* And yay for ice cream!
Bummer that fannish niece has just disappeared like that, even for her grandmother and a birthday present.

Your niece is really missing out.

Date: 2023-09-03 01:26 pm (UTC)The two times I've got stuck pushing my MiL were on cobbles. The street does have smooth parts up the side but a lot of the cafes had put tables and chairs on those, and in the end it was just easier to turn back.
I honestly don't get my niece. It would take her all of a few seconds to say thank you.

Yeah, my niece isn't behaving well. I get her wanting to leave home and she's living her best life now with a casual job and following Harry Styles around to his concerts. But it would take seconds to message my MiL back and say thank you.

Date: 2023-09-03 06:21 pm (UTC)I don't remember if you were still there when we went to Whitby the year we were in Yorkshire. I definitely remember the totally fabulous mussels with samphire I had at the fish & chips place though. And the VERY MANY steps up to the monastery and the picturesque lobster pots stacked in the harbour. It's a pity your visit was marred by hordes of tourists!
Those cliff lifts look a bit scary but also fun!
It's so sad to hear fannish niece has decided to completely disappear like that!

Date: 2023-09-05 06:57 am (UTC)I was with you on that trip. I remember that fish and chips place and how bad the weather was on the way there. Those steps are a slog to get up, but so worth it when you do. I know I'm a tourist myself so shouldn't complain about it being crowded, but we really did pick a bad time to go. The schools go back today so I imagine it'll be much quieter from now.
I was amazed at the cliff lifts, they looked so strange going up and down.
Yeah, fannish niece isn't behaving well right now. She still hasn't contacted my MiL and said thanks for the money.
