I have a pet peeve, and normally I just bitch in mail, but gah.

When someone posts a picture of Lance, and someone comments on his outfit or the way he's standing, by saying 'And he said he was straight!' Just no! Every single member of Nsync wore outfits as outlandish as Lance did. They had stylists, that's what stylists do, put their clients into clothes designed to be noticed. It wasn't Lance's inner gay seeping through his veneer of straightness. Not unless that was happening to the other four too, and as much as I love my imagined thoughts of group sex orgies between them all, that wasn't happening.

Also. Liking him better now because he's gay? Why?! I don't mean respecting him because he came out. I mean, actually thinking he's better because he's gay. Someone explain that to me, because I don't get it.

Okay, I'm done now, and I'm sorry if I offended anyone, but it drives me nuts.

I might understand the first thing if it was a picture from a private occasion, but saying it about anything that was in anyway official, be it a photoshoot or a performance or appearing at an awards show, is just nonsense! (Which is what makes me really wonder when Kevin shows up at a party during Backstreet's hiatus in a ruffled shirt and sandals ;-)

The second thing is the one that really irritates me though! It's like they think he's suddenly different just because he's come out! He's exactly the same person he was before! Grrrrr!!!

I guess, I just think the whole idea of being able to judge sexuality by clothes makes me boggle. I mean, even if Lance was pictured wearing a t-shirt saying Real men take it up the ass I'd be looking out for Joey wearing one too. It could be argued that stereotypes hold a grain of truth somewhere, but Lance as a stereotypical flaming gay guy. I don't see it. And especially don't see it with official pictures which are a whole different ballgame.

Exactly! When he first came out I ran across a post of where someone said that they liked Lance so much more now. Because he's gay and being gay makes things so much better. He hadn't changed as a person, how could she like him better? I just don't get it.

I joined a few comms in order to gather links for the newsletter. One of which makes me want to bash my head against a wall on numerous occasions.

I tend to vent to friends, because no one wants to hear me bitch on here, but man, a few weeks ago Lance wore a white wifebeater and there were squees about how cool it was Lance was gay now so he could wear such a gay outfit.

Grrr, I know! Besides, even if he had chosen those clothes himself, that still doesn't necessarily mean anything. None of the gay people I know look particularly gay. And when people say they knew he was gay because used to look like a girl when he was 16. WTF? Being girly and gay have little to do with each other I'm afraid. There are no "gay" facial features. (And the same goes for JC, who I never even thought was girly, but you know that's what people say.)

Such a pet peeve of mine, omg. I have actually defriended over this, because it is STILL judging someone based on their sexuality first and everything else after, and it is offensive and wrong and pisses me the hell off. The responses I've seen when that's pointed out tend to fall in the line of "tee hee I just love gay boys ::giggle:: it's all about the slash ::giggle::" and I want to smack them.

Using someone's sexuality to put a check mark on one's mental Reasons to Like Him/Her is just as crappy as using it as a Reason Not to Like Him/Her. The person hasn't changed at all from before, nothing is different, and going from "Oh, Actor, he's fine, I like him okay, but nothing. . . what? He's gay? OMG I LOVE HIM EEEEEEEEEEE!" is childish, immature, and I'll say it again, offensive.

Being gay doesn't make someone "better" or "worse" or more worthy of fannish love.

I wasn't into popslash before lance came out. In fact, the only nsyncer i could have picked out of a lineup was justin before lance came out.

I didn't start reading popslash because of lance, but him being the gay one made me seek out more information about lance the person than any of the others. It's not that I think that being gay makes a person inherently better or more fun or whatever, it's more that I was interested in the process of a boybander coming out (and i was kind of cranky at the straight acting gay comment and i wanted more info to decide whether i kind of hated him or not).

So you could say that I thought he was better because he was gay. I was certainly more interested in him because of it. And frankly, I still like him more than many of the others because he's gay. He's one of my people yanno?

Don't EVEN get me started on that. One of my dearest and closests friends is homosexual and he is amazing and awesome and so freaking weird. We use to run around playing video games and semi-harrassing ditzy girls and they'd always be like, "OH Em Jee, go away!" and then they'd be like, "Are you gay?" and when he'd say yes they'd all practically swoon, "Oh that's so cool! You're so cool! You wanna hang out some time? I can't believe I Have a gay friend!"

wtf!? That just. No. Nononono. I think that is terribly disrespectful. Liking someone for their sexuality? Unless you are interesting in dating this person it really shouldn't bother you one way or the other! It should not matter.

THe word part is is when I'mw it him and his other friends introduce as, "Hey, this is my gay friend Gabe." What? Does he need a label? If you don't introduce me as your, "Straight friend Sammie," along with everyone else in the world that you know, then there is no reason to introduce my friend like that! It's rude and it obnoxious. Gabe isn't the person he is because he is gay he is that person because of the way he is raised and the way he thinks and the things that he likes.

I'm not sure if I agree or disagree. I mean, I do agree but. I like Lance more now - I'm not sure like is the right word, but I respect him much more now that he's out. I loved him fine when he wasn't out, but finally having the balls to come out and be all he is, that was a deal breaker for me, I adore him now. And I guess I feel it's easier for me to identify with him now that he's openly queer, too. So I do agree - he's not any better than anyone else or before, but I like him better.

See, I think this is where I fall down at explaining myself. I totally understand respecting him more now and yeah, that would bleed into liking. My annoyance is more the people who didn't like him before, then found out he slept with men, then immediately stated they liked him now.

Lance is a package deal made up of awesomeness, and his sexuality shouldn't be the only thing that makes you decide if you like him. What he does about his sexuality, how he's open now and handles his life, yeah. Just because of who he sleeps with, no.

I understand you perfectly, Ter. I do love Lance more now, but not because of sexuality, more so that he made something that could've been very private public. He handles himself in a way, I really wish I could and that's a trait that I really admire. I also am happy that he's able to live his life the way he wants to, nowadays. :) He's very obvious he happier and that makes me happy. :)

You're quite right about the outfits. I never thought Lance was gay because of the clothes he wore. All the guys wore them. XD It was nothing obvious really about Lance that screamed GAY, but there was always a vibe I got from him, and I don't know what it is, to be truthful lol. Lance didn't seem gay for any obvious reasons to me.

I had joined his blog following shortly after discovering he'd made a one that fans could access. After he came out, I was happy for him or whatever, really, really happy ^__^, but it didn't really change anything about him except that perhaps he could talk about his boyfriends/lovelife now? I don't know. Mostly it wasn't a big deal and then it sort of was, but it should've been only for a moment if that. :-/

I completely agree with everything you said, but I feel like I must defend still_gay at least a little bit. Sure, it's mostly comprised of GayLance fangirls, but it's an extremely active community and always has the latest Lance gossip first. So, while some of the comments are annoying, I can't hate a community that is so dedicated to Lance. Plus, the people who started the whole OMG LANCE AND REICHEN BROKE UP fiasco were immediately banned from the community, so at least the mods do their job.

Like I said above, still_gay is a great comm for getting news and pictures, and the majority of people there are cool. It's just, I see some insane stuff in comments.
