I have a pet peeve, and normally I just bitch in mail, but gah.

When someone posts a picture of Lance, and someone comments on his outfit or the way he's standing, by saying 'And he said he was straight!' Just no! Every single member of Nsync wore outfits as outlandish as Lance did. They had stylists, that's what stylists do, put their clients into clothes designed to be noticed. It wasn't Lance's inner gay seeping through his veneer of straightness. Not unless that was happening to the other four too, and as much as I love my imagined thoughts of group sex orgies between them all, that wasn't happening.

Also. Liking him better now because he's gay? Why?! I don't mean respecting him because he came out. I mean, actually thinking he's better because he's gay. Someone explain that to me, because I don't get it.

Okay, I'm done now, and I'm sorry if I offended anyone, but it drives me nuts.

Ahahahaha. Let me stop giggling about Kevin before I answer seriously.

I guess, I just think the whole idea of being able to judge sexuality by clothes makes me boggle. I mean, even if Lance was pictured wearing a t-shirt saying Real men take it up the ass I'd be looking out for Joey wearing one too. It could be argued that stereotypes hold a grain of truth somewhere, but Lance as a stereotypical flaming gay guy. I don't see it. And especially don't see it with official pictures which are a whole different ballgame.

It's like they think he's suddenly different just because he's come out! He's exactly the same person he was before! Grrrrr!!!

Exactly! When he first came out I ran across a post of where someone said that they liked Lance so much more now. Because he's gay and being gay makes things so much better. He hadn't changed as a person, how could she like him better? I just don't get it.

I sincerely hope that most of the people making these remarks are very young and have never to their knowledge met anyone who's gay because otherwise I'll just get depressed.

PS I recommend you to stop reading the comments in <lj user="still_gay" - I did and I'm much happier now :-) I'm only a member for the pictures these days.

Me too. More than anything I wish we could enjoy Lance being out with his boyfriends on the same level as we do when we see any of the others out with their SOs or girlfriends.

I guess, I don't see sexuality as something that needs celebrating. It should be just there and unremarkable, be that person gay, straight or whatever.

Making a big deal about clothes is like saying if you're gay everyone dresses a certain way, which isn't true at all.

How did you know which comm I meant? ;)

But equal treament in fandom would mean having to read about about how Lance's boyfriends are all skanks/hos/users/utter bitches, and how fat/anorexic/ugly/badly dressed they are, and that would be sad.

Truly, not reading the comments on [livejournal.com profile] still_gay is the path to inner zen.

True. But maybe one day the girlfriends could be squeed at too. I know, when pigs fly.

Sadly I read many things that annoy me. I'm an idiot like that.

There's supporters of the SO's as well. And, it is sad that people talk that way about them with such venom anyway. So, which is sadder? That Lance's dates are squealed over simply because they have the same genitalia as Lance or people disliking the man of the moment because he had the guy they all wanted?

I cannot agree about the comm more, however.

They're both sad, really. All SOs should be welcomed with open arms, even the evil ones. We need baddies to write about, after all. :-)

I was gonna let this go, but I'm gonna pop in anyway. I whole-heartedly agree and understand everything you're saying, but.... maybe she meant she likes him better now bc HE seems to be so much happier now. Or maybe she feels personally offended bc he was hiding/lying for so many years. He's always been charming and real and sincere, but being allowed to leave clubs with your date, not having to hide or worry about who says what, being out and accepted for who you are no matter what.... IMHO his newfound freedom just totally opened him up and made him even more endearing than he already was. If your commenter meant anything other than that.... she's a complete and utter fool.

And btw... if anyone defriends you bc of this, then your garden is better off without the weeds...

I'm glad you popped in.

I've seen a few people mention that they like him more now. If it's for the reasons you say, and they are good and valid reasons, I'd be much happier. There's no doubt that he does look happier, and that's a good thing.

What rubs me the wrong way is when I get the impression that he's liked more only because he's gay. Not because of how he's changed due to coming out, just that he has sex with men. Which is an insane reason to change how you think of a person.

IMHO his newfound freedom just totally opened him up and made him even more endearing than he already was

I totally agree. I enjoy seeing him have the freedom to date who he likes.

Thank you for putting your point forward. It does help me reevaluate some of the comments I see.

since you mentioned it.... don't forget that those 123000 friends he has aren't all there for the talented, beautiful, happyman. Sad as it is, some are there only bc he is gay. They see him as a cause or an icon.... at least that's how I see things.

I've talked about this to various people, and I agree with you. As soon as he outed himself he became a cause, people latching onto his sexuality only. Not everyone, not by a long shot, but enough.

Personally I'd hate to have so much focus on one aspect of my life. He deals with it well from what I've seen.

He's always dealt with it well. It's one of his most amazing qualities. He has this self-assuredness and strength that just BLOWS ME AWAY. No matter who says what, he always just glides along. Some ppl call him a flake or a ditz, but it's so much more than that. He has so much more depth.

I'm unaware of what comment set Terri off in particular for this post, but I do know that soon after he appeared on the front of People people mentioned how much more attractive he was to them now that he was gay. Physically and sexually attractive. And, on top of that, more people who stated they had not liked him before but now that he was gay loved him. Being so close to his outing I can't give them [and the others I know where in that school of thought] credit for finding his grace in dealing with the events appealing. I'm fairly certain, and Terri can correct me if I'm wrong here - in fact I hope she will - those opinions are the base for her frustration. Recent comments/posts with the same wording making it difficult to determine if they in fact are attracted to his sexuality or the person he is now, given the circumstances surrounding his sexuality.

Not sure what you mean by "being so close to his outing" but.... I do understand and share your frustrations. I was just trying to play devil's advocate for a minute, maybe give someone the benefit of the doubt. Please don't misunderstand me.

The posts/comments were made within days, if not the day, of Lance's outing. Doesn't exactly leave time for his new less stressed etc personality to win them over.

I didn't mean to make you feel misunderstood. I'm sure there are people who admire all those things you mentioned. I know there are. I just don't think that's who she was talking about. :-/
