I'm stunned.
This is probably old news by now, but a NSync het writer auctioned a CD of their stories on E-Bay and the bid went to $265.
They auctioned fanfic on e-bay. I have no words. I don't agree with zines being sold on e-bay never mind a cd of fanfic from someone's site. Someone is setting herself up for a C&D order.
Then there's the whole thing about writing fanfic for profit, that's just insane.

From:re: selling fanfic on EBay
Date: 2003-09-04 06:53 am (UTC)That writer is setting herself up for a world of hurt. It isn't just that 'NSync is trademarked, and the performers' images are the images of the trademark. The band has its own mechanisms for selling photos and would not look kindly at people siphoning off that stream. And people do have a proprietary interest in their own names.
She is also setting herself up for a huge lawsuit for defamation. She is writing about real people, attributing emotions and actions to them. I don't know how hard 'NSync's lawyers troll EBay for this stuff but if they find it, it could go very badly for her.
She's also calling attention to fanfic in the worst possible way. Face it, most fanfic exists because the orginal creators allow it to exist. If somebody starts making it worthwhile for the originals to go after it, a lot of nice stuff will disappear.
JMNSHO. Karen
