mahoni pointed out this awesome lol squirrel I guess, one that fits in with The Trails That I Follow perfectly and made me laugh for a long time. Spoilers for the story if you still haven't read.
I thought I'd got away with the Bells complication of affected taste buds until I just ate some sour sweets. So wrong, omg.
Let's talk about this picture. Who is in charge here? Are Gerard and Mikey guarding their pleasure slaves? Is it some kind of Cinderella thing where the Way brothers are really horses, Bob Cinders and Ray and Frank particularly dashing mice?

I think that Gerard is the Prince who tries really really hard to look dashing and serious and cool, even though he's actually a huge geek; and Mikey is his little brother who is really really glad he will not have to be King one day because he's having a fling with this cute son of a minor baron and he's pretty sure his parents wouldn't let him date some nobody if he was the Crown Prince. And Frank and Ray are Bob's stepbrothers, except they aren't evil, and they try to make life easier for Bob because their dad is a pretty big asshole. And when Bob sort of accidentally falls for the Crown Prince, Frank is all "I CAN TOTALLY HELP YOU WITH THAT. Because as you know, Bob, I am dating Prince Michael on the sly."

Bob would run into Gerard when he's in the town, pretending to be an Earl, and then keeps running into him and having to carry on the pretense because otherwise he could be arrested for impersonating nobility! (Even though Bob is, technically, nobility, since his own father was Marquess or something like that; but Bob doesn't know that, because his father died when he was really really young, and his stepfather makes sure Bob is unaware of unimportant details *ahem* of that nature.)
And Frank hears all about it and teases Bob about his crush, which Bob insists is NOT TRUE, he so does not have a crush on the arrogant Crown Prince. And Frank is all, "He's not arrogant, he's just a total failboat when it comes to flirting and stuff." And Bob is all "...WELL STILL. There is no crush. And if you tell Prince Mikey I will replace the stuffing in your mattress with manure, dammit."
So Frank doesn't tell. But then Mikey finds out anyway -- he's with Gerard once when Gerard goes to sekritly meet Bob, and recognizes Bob. He says something to Frank about it, and Frank has been exploding to tell him anyway so he spills everything. And Bob is mortified, but Mikey is all, "Dude, he's totally in love with you, just *tell* him, it will be okay!"
But when Bob tries to tell him it's totally a disaster, because Bob's stepfather spoils everything by telling the King about it *first* (he found out too, possibly by eavesdropping). And Gerard is flustered and confused and rejects Bob! And it's very sad!
Bob's stepfather is still a bit concerned about leaving Bob anywhere he could stumble into the Crown Prince again, though, so he sells Bob to a Countess to whom Bob's stepfather owes a lot of money. She's been trying to bed Bob for ages anyway, so stepdad knows she'll take Bob as payment against the remaining balance of the loan.
Which is all very creepy and unpleasant for Bob, and Bob tries to run away a few times, but keeps getting caught.
Meanwhile, Frank and Mikey are trying to figure out how to SAVE Bob, and eventually figure out that Bob is a Marquess or whatever and figure out where Frank's dad sent him, and they're all set to go out there and get Bob. But Gerard stops them, and when they tell him everything he's all OH NOES, because he's been moping around the castle for weeks missing Bob and figuring the reason Bob hasn't contacted him is because Bob is pissed off at him. He didn't know it was because Bob was IN TROUBLE!
So Gerard races to his rescue, with a retinue of soldiers (and Mikey and Frank who insist on going with).
Meanwhile, Bob is trying to run away again, and the Countess' bodyguards run him down again (this time in the courtyard, which sucks, because the last couple of times he made it at least through the damn gates). But instead of getting his ass kicked (again) like he expects, there's a big ruckus, and a lot of shouting, and Bob hears someone yelling something like "unhand that man, motherfuckers!" and suddenly nobody is holding him down anymore. And Bob gets up, and Gerard is standing there, looking equal parts enraged (because of Bob's state of dishevelment and raggedness) and depressed (because he blames himself omg).
And then there is all kinds of stuff about Gerard apologizing, and Bob apologizing too (because as far as he's concerned it's all his own fault for lying and thinking he had any right to court the Crown freaking Prince, for God's sake), and about how Bob is actually a Marquess or whatever, which means it is acceptable for Gerard to take him home to live happily ever after, after all. Except that Gerard would have done that anyway because he is in looooove with Bob.
And when Bob gets to the castle Frank is already settled in there with Mikey. Ray is there too, because Gerard wants him trained as a diplomat because he would make an AWESOME diplomat for when Gerard is King someday. And stuff.
