I meant to mention this the other day when I was asked, and then forgot. While I do live in the north of England it's nowhere near where the floods are. I don't think it's stopped raining for nearly a week now but thankfully there's no flooding in this area at all.
Another thing I meant to do. Remember the other day when I posted an old skool MCR picture?. Well, a few stories happened in comments and they're so awesome I want to let people know. So, we have the one where Bob is a wandering soap seller who is wooing girl!Gerard with custom soaps, and then gets hurt!. The one where The Way clan buy a wife but find out that Bob isn't the wife they were expecting at all. Also, Mikey rocks an apron ♥, the one where Bob gets kidnapped and there is danger and awesomeness! and the one where there are zombies! which is always a good time! So go, encourage people to make fully formed stories :D
Step One
- Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
- If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.
- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ so that the holiday joy will spread.
Step Two
- Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:
- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use - or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free - do it.
You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf - to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not - it's your call.
There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.
(1) If you can afford to do so, give something. Put animal food in the collection bins at the supermarket, buy an extra gift for the present drives that tend to happen at this time of year.
(2) Look through your old stuff, see if there's something you can take to the nearest charity shop.
(3) Donate money. Causes close to my heart are the charities that help people with Lupus, Parkinson's Disease, Arthrogriphosis. But any will do.
(4) Do something nice today, something that will make someone smile. Smiles are awesome, shiny things.
(5) Go comment on something, a post, a story, an icon post. Let people know you appreciate what they do/say.
(6) There's a load of these wish lists going around this time of year. Look at them, try and grant a wish.
(7) Sometime today do something for yourself. I know it gets busy around now but take a moment to kick back, eat chocolate, read a fic you've got tabbed.
(8) For Camp Sparkle to be now, I miss you guys so much, and in addition, that other awesome people could travel over and be Camp Sparklers too.
There's nothing else I want. You're all amazing anyway and delight me on a daily basis with the constant chatting in comments, the stories that spring up, the support, the fun and insanity and pretty pictures. *smooches you all*
And now I need to go find what the chemical smell is in my house, before I end up gassed to death.

Date: 2009-11-24 01:20 pm (UTC)Flooding does suck. I feel so bad for the people who have been flooded out, some of them have lost everything.

Date: 2009-11-24 03:20 pm (UTC)If everyone had a wishlist like yours I would maybe do one myself but I usually have so little energy and time at this time of the year so it's best for me if I sidestep the issue completely. I must remember to give some money to the local cat sanctuary though, I usually try to do it every couple of months and it's been a while since I did it last. (And I totally agree with # 8!!)
What was the chemical smell? Nothing dangerous I hope?

Date: 2009-11-24 08:44 pm (UTC)The thing is with wishlists is it's a bad time of year. Which is nothing that can be changed because they are for the holiday season. But right now there's no way I could think about offering to write even a ficlet. The same with you and graphics I'd imagine.
It seemed to be an onion that had started to rot, giving off a very powerful smell. They must have been super strength onions.
