Sep. 5th, 2023 08:18 amMost of the schools in the area go back today.
The little girl who lives next door is starting her first year of infant school and was very excited about doing so when I talked to her yesterday. I'm looking forward to seeing all the photos on Facebook where the kids look so neat and tidy, and then inevitably come back looking like they've been dragged through a hedge backwards.
James had his own sort of back-to-school moment yesterday because he started back to work. Only two four-hour shifts this week, then three-four hours next week, gradually increasing in time over six weeks with the option to extend that if needed. Occ Health did make noises about him extending his time off until he could see the work physio, which I understand from their thinking, but from ours, and the fact he's only been getting half pay and more importantly, feels okay, just needs to build stamina up again, meant he said no to that. But, they are keeping in close touch to ensure he's not being rushed back too fast this time.
Bodhi, with Lucy's help, decided she wanted to video call people last night. She did not pick a good time to do so. It had been hot all day, I'd been working in the garden, had a lobster bath and had just settled on the couch looking like a giant red-faced tomato when the call happened. Down with unexpected video calls, I say!
It's going to be another lovely day so was just out hanging the washing on the line, and was there when the construction noise started, so they must start at 8am on the dot. It's still the same thud thud thud but I don't really notice it in the house now so it seems people were right and it has started to fade into white noise. It is interesting seeing the retail park be built, they have huge metal columns sticking out all over now, which I assume are something to do with the foundations.
Today we're doing a tip run for my SiL and then have been invited to Pauline's for lunch. I suspect she's got an ulterior motive to ask us to take some golf clubs and bag that my brother has been supposed to have been picking up for nearly a month now. They belonged to dad and she wants Chris to have them, and he keeps saying he'll get them but never turns up. I do get he needs to prioritise when he's got his own business, and is working so hard he's exhausted at the end of the day. But I do wish he'd be more reliable when he says he'll do something.
Ah, my neighbour just posted the first-day photos! Her little girl looks adorable! She's going to the same infant school Corey attended and the uniform has changed so much. He just had to wear a logoed polo shirt and jumper and grey trousers, now they do the whole shirt, tie and logoed cardigan thing.

Date: 2023-09-05 11:56 am (UTC)Yay for being back to work! I hope the slow pace works for him so he's not worn out by it.
It's great that the noise isn't as noticeable now.
Oh man, I would hate video calls that catch you at bad moments!
I hope you enjoy lunch, even if there is an ulterior motive. *g*

And yes, unexpected video calls should not be allowed! See also unexpected visitors, and unexpected phonecalls! LOL

I'm with you there! What extra annoys me with unexpected visitors is they always seem to arrive when the place looks a tip. The days the house looks great, not a soul to be seen.

Date: 2023-09-05 04:21 pm (UTC)The slow pace seems to be going okay, he had a shift yesterday and will be back on Friday so a nice long rest in between. At first, they suggested two-hour shifts over more days but considering the nearly an hour there and back commute, longer hours over fewer days made more sense.
Video calls need to be banned! Unless scheduled giving me time to prepare for them.
Sadly lunch was cancelled as Pauline wasn't feeling well. So I've been to spend the afternoon with Kayleigh and Bodhi instead.

Date: 2023-09-06 03:46 pm (UTC)Well, Pauline didn't feel well yesterday so the lunch was changed until today. The food was delicious, and sure enough, just as I was leaving Pauline asked if I could take the clubs *g*
The things weigh a ton! I don't know how golfers manage to walk around the whole course with them.

Date: 2023-09-07 06:09 pm (UTC)Unexpected calls of all sorts are totally evil and ought to be prohibited by law! I need to be properly prepared if I'm going to deal with people!!
While it must be nice that the construction noise is starting to fade into the background I'm sure you'll be relieved when they're finished so hopefully it won't take too long.
They force tiny kids to wear ties??!! Poor kids!!

Date: 2023-09-08 03:18 am (UTC)So, I have distinct memories of the cartoon The Jetsons from the 1970s, which took place in space in the future (if you guys didn't have it). And in one episode, the mother had a video call early in the day, and once it was over, she took off a mask that was just her face with make-up on it and her hair done. You need one of those. *g*
Found it! Although it is her putting on the mask. Apparently, there are multiple clips, but this was the first.

I agree completely!
I'm amazed at how fast the construction is happening. There are giant poles sticking out all over which I assume will eventually end up supporting walls, and that the constant banging is those foundations poles being whacked into place. I know they're working long days, always starting at 8 and finishing at 5.
Yep, tiny kids in ties, at least at that school. I was surprised myself. I know all the secondary schools have ties and blazers still, but thought the younger schools would have stayed in polo shirts/smart trouser combo but it seems not.
