Aug. 6th, 2024 08:58 amWeight management theme yesterday was snacking
It was actually one of the most interesting talks we've had. Though, James caused a big outbreak of breath when it was asked what snacks people liked, and he said crab sticks. We both thought they were a relatively healthy option, but seems not in the slightest. Which is why I like this class so much, there's always something new to find out.
The exercise part of it included lifting a 10kg grab bag, but using your legs not your back, and it doesn't sound that heavy, but man, getting the form right, and then doing it as part of three circuits was tough. Especially as it was an upper body heavy circuit, with every spot apart from one, including dumbbells, resistant bands or body weight press-ups against the stage.
I'd say I was glowing by the end, but truth was, as it's a hot, sunny day, I was more than glowing, I could have been wrung out.
I was Bodhisitting for a few hours on Friday. She's just moved rooms at nursery, going in with older children and has been very unsettled because of it, being very clingy with Lucy and Kayleigh. So, I went prepared with distractions and took a Peppa Pig cake making kit and as a back-up, a cookie making kit. And it was good that I did have that back up as while we had fun making the cakes I had a nightmare with the oven, the first time I hadn't actually switched it on properly, so when the timer went off the cakes were still raw. Tried again, left them too long, and this time they were black at the edges and bottoms. We kept going though and added the muddy puddle icing and Peppa rice stickers, and Bodhi tried her best to eat one, but yeah, they all ended in the bin. The cookies were nice though, especially when I peeled the rice stickers off the cake and put them on the cookies *g*
On Sunday, I was looking at the Too Good to Go app and saw a Company Shop dairy bag. Now, Company bags are always amazing, so getting one is rare as hens teeth, so I nabbed that baby in seconds. Picked it up at 4 and for £3 got 6 tubs of cottage cheese, 6 tubs of creme fraiche, 6 tubs of sour cream, 6 tubs of olive oil spread, 6 blocks of cheese, 6 tubs of cream cheese, 6 pots of Greek yoghurt, six blocks of curd cheese, 6 big tubs of fruit yoghurt and a random goat cheese.
We eat a lot of yoghurt, which I was hoping would be part of the surprise bag, so that will be eaten, and the cheese will last for ages, but I have no idea what to do with the sour cream as it's just not something we eat.
Pauline invited us for tea yesterday and when we got there she'd put on a small buffet, which was lovely. So we got to hang and talk and got home heading towards 7, when we could watch the season finale of House of the Dragon, and it was a good one, though it did feel more like a penultimate ep and not an end one.
Today James has an appointment at the limb centre, so we'll be heading off to Newcastle in half an hour. Tomorrow he has his spinal injections and at that point all his appointments will be over. Apart from one last one for his hip that wasn't for months, and was cancelled anyway, so he'll probably not get that until next year now.

Date: 2024-08-06 11:43 am (UTC)Good thinking to take distractions with you, and a back-up! I'd have been frustrated by that experience, so I'm glad it was all good with Bodhi in the end.
Wow, that sure is a lot of dairy products! Over here we use sour cream in dips (for bread or chips) and it can be used in baked goods. I use it in a coffee cake that is yum. Also on things like tacos. We use it so often I always have one (and hopefully one back-up) in the fridge. If you can't use it in any of that, maybe look up other types of recipes that use it, or give it away?

Date: 2024-08-06 01:39 pm (UTC)That sounds like a heavy workout! I wish I was close enough to join the class. It sounds like it's well worth the time and effort.
Sour cream can be added to a lot of stuff. Personally, I tend to use greek yogurt in place of sour cream. I suspect you could go the other way and use sour cream in place of greek yogurt in recipes.

Yay for buffet and hanging out.

Spinal injections sound terrifying, but nice to be done for a bit soon!!

Date: 2024-08-07 11:50 pm (UTC)Maybe distribute the sour cream to friends and family? I can tell you it doesn't freeze well - it's safe to freeze it but the texture gets all messed up.

Date: 2024-08-08 11:49 am (UTC)I can't believe I messed the cakes up so badly. I'm sure Kayleigh's oven hates me *g*

Yeah, I took your suggestion and have been looking at recipes, and have given some away as no way would I ever use it all in time. Even doing that, I more than got my money's worth.

I wish you could join the class too, as it really is a good one. I love that everyone just does what they can and there's no pressure to be perfect. It's so encouraging too, and I love that everyone claps at the end, it makes me feel very accomplished to get to that point.
I've been looking up recipes to use up the dairy, and am about to try a veggie sauce later. It looks tasty enough on the page, so fingers crossed.

So true!
I was very surprised when I saw Pauline had put out an actual buffet. She must have been feeling fancy.

Date: 2024-08-08 11:56 am (UTC)I actually had to send Kayleigh multiple messages asking how to turn her oven on, and still burnt the cakes.

Oh, that is so wonderful! And, I know, right!? it's horrible when the things people say will help, actually do. Especially when there's effort involved.
Injections are now done! Hopefully, they'll last for a year again.

Date: 2024-08-08 01:26 pm (UTC)Apparently they're ultra processed and made from blasted off pieces of fish, the leftover bits when the good stuff has been filet'ed off. I guess they could be healthy if bought from a fishmonger, and contain actual crab. But the ones you can get in supermarkets, not so much.
Yeah, the sour cream has been given away, along with a lot of the other stuff. Even with the stuff I kept, I more than got my moneys worth.

Date: 2024-08-08 01:28 pm (UTC)I did! At least, I hope so. I'm about to make a bell pepper, mushroom, and spinach sauce using some of the excess dairy collection. Fingers crossed it turns out tasty.

Date: 2024-08-09 06:25 pm (UTC)I feel for Bodhi! She's so young and has had so few experience of change in her life that move must feel so disorienting for her. Sucks about the cake nightmare so go you for remembering to bring backup cookies!
That's A LOT of dairy stuff! I hope you'll manage to find a use for all of it. I mostly use sour cream in cold sauces or sallad dressings.

Date: 2024-08-11 02:06 pm (UTC)I'm glad you had backup cookies (the Peppa pig cakes look like fun, but they're quite small, right? Which will make them a bit fussy time/temp wise)
WOW that's an amazing bag - our company's tgtg bags are 5* rated and you can never, ever get them, and it they're like that I can see why! Full fat dairy mostly freezes well thankfully!

Date: 2024-08-11 02:33 pm (UTC)Thankfully, Bodhi seems to be getting used to her new class at nursery, but you're right, it was disorientating for her. She only knows a few people, so new teachers and new classmates was a lot.
So much dairy stuff! I gave some away but am still plugging away at the rest.

Date: 2024-08-11 02:41 pm (UTC)Yep! That was exactly our thought too, low in calories and a decent protein hit for the size of the sticks. But they are UPF so not the best choice. I really enjoy the classes, I don't always take all of the advice, but it always makes sense and makes me think.
Yeah, the Peppa cakes were small, so once they were overbaked a little it was game over, and they went black within minutes. If we ever make them again, I'll take them out a bit early, even if they do look white on the top.
Our Company tgtg bags are 5* rated too, and yeah, you can understand why people are so eager to get one. I've only managed to get a bag twice, and both time the products came in a crate. Between freezing, cooking with, eating and giving away, I can finally open my fridge again without being confronted with a wall of dairy products.
