I'm sure I'm cursed with my computer lately.

When I woke up this morning my screen saver had pixalated and frozen. I rebooted, got the no signal imput thing, rebooted again and solved that problem. Except then I couldn't get online.

I'd received email at half 6 this morning, suggesting something happened between then and me getting up.

Both of the computers connected to the wireless are working fine, it's just mine, which is directly connected, that's off. It says it's connected at 100.0 mbps and from Googling it suggests it may be a cable issue.

We've swapped cables -- and many other things, including contacting Sky tech support who were insistent that it was due to me using Firefox, why that would effect my email I have no idea -- and I guess, just. Help.

Anyone got any ideas?

Is there any chance your computer updated itself during the night with changes to firewalls or such? I am kind of boggled by this.

Nope, I can always tell when it does that. It just seems like it was fine at 6 thirty then suddenly just stopped working. It's all kinds of weird.

It says it's connected, but can you tell if there are any packets being transferred? I'm assuming you are using something like Windows XP?

I've just had a look and it says 204 sent and 0 received.

I am running XP, yeah.

Thank you for trying to help :)

Absolutely babe. I've seen this problem before. Unfortunately it's been AGES since I've used Windows. The problem isn't the cable. It's the network manager driver thing. Lemme google and see if I can't find you instructions to follow.

Try this go to the start menu, go to run, type cmd, in the terminal, type "netsh int ip reset all" then hit enter, and then "netsh winsock reset catalog" and hit enter. Then restart.

I have to warn you, I cannot test those commands first. I've googled and they look correct, but my husband is also unavailable, so I have no super trusted source. They shouldn't hurt anything.

Sadly that doesn't seem to have helped. I guess it's a shop job.

Thank you so much for the suggestion <3

Arrgghh!! I wish there was something I could do to help but since I use Mac I can't even come up with a reasonable suggestion I'm afraid. Good luck getting it fixed asap whatever it is!

dude, tech support claims your *browser* is affecting your *network capability* - that's just Made of Fail, right there!

(Hurray for James fixing things!)

I was so pissed off with Sky yesterday. The tech James was talking to just kept on repeating it was because we used Firefox and thunderbird.

The poor guy put in hours of work because actually starting work at midday. He deserves a gold star.

I'm totally not laughing because this is kind of a nightmarish situation - just thinking of finding Dean dead in the morning makes me want to cry - but you do seem to have been cursed re: your computers, indeed...

Maybe a little exorcism would be in order? Something to lift the curse *nodnod*

The thing is, Silver's not that old. Sure, in computer terms he's past his best but not so much things should just stop working like that. It's all kinds of annoying.

An exorcism is needed for sure.

Oh, the good old "connected but nothing's moving"! I've had that several times and I still don't know how to fix it!!

I have no idea how to fix it either. What James had to do was connect my PC to the wireless network as the connection that had been working for years just wouldn't move at all. It was all kinds of frustrating, especially as I have no idea why.
