Last night I dreamt I was getting a very awesome double hug from [livejournal.com profile] saba1789 and [livejournal.com profile] valya22 This is something that happened often at Camp Sparkle, because they give the best hugs ever!

Other awesome things. The pain behind my ear has finally eased off. It was like I was being stabbed repeatedly in one specific point and was having to combine pain killers just to touch it. So yeah, I'm really glad to see the back of that.

It's bucketing it down here right now, so I doubt we'll leave the house today, especially as James wasn't feeling too well last night. Two days ago we ended up at the hospital because he thought he'd got an infection in his arm. Thankfully it was just blisters that had popped so they put on a new cast and he goes back on Wednesday to get his stitches out. While we were in the fracture room Kayleigh ( my sister ) turned up to get the cast off her foot. X-rays show the broken bone is even worst now than it was before she had the cast put on, but she refused a new cast and has to go back in two weeks, where if it still hasn't healed they're thinking of pinning it.

[livejournal.com profile] wrisomifu starts today, and I have to admit I'm looking forward to it. As I can't talk about my exchange story in public I'm going to use it to write my bandom au fic. By the end
of the month people will be sick of hearing about Bob and his kidlets.

[livejournal.com profile] musicboxgirl tagged my for this.

Ask me either a broad question (i.e 'who is your cruelest character?', 'what is your most optimistic story?') or a specific question/request ('what world does ___ come from?', 'tell me about ___') and I will answer you. Or you can ask meta- questions like 'what was the inspiration for creating ____?'

Ha! I'm glad you knew I meant you!

I often worry I don't write Pete well, simply because character wise he's so complex. He's got so many layers that it feels like an impossible task to capture them all. I write him as very media aware, loyal to a fault, an incredible business man but also damaged in many ways, and that still doesn't approach how amazing/fucked up he really is.

I have to mention Jon too, simply because I don't really know enough about him beyond the surface clichéd, laid-back animal loving, stoner characterisation. He's so much more, but as I don't have a handle on what that more is I worry about writing a cardboard cutout Jon.

The best way I've found to cure writers block is waiting it out. You can try and force things but that never works out well. Writing is supposed to be enjoyable, and if you're sitting staring at a screen and getting frustrated how can it be? In those cases, just go off and do something else.

Though sometimes waiting isn't possible, maybe you have a deadline for a challenge or it's been months and you just can't wait any more. In those cases I've asked for ficlet prompts and just tried to get something out, no matter how short. Of course you run the risk of writing rubbish in those cases, I know I have, but sometimes it's just what you need to get words on a screen. Then the rest will hopefully come.

Well, I foolishly put clothes on after my shower at the gym, so I did the meme too. I have a question: what is it that makes a character your favourite, in whichever fandom? Are your favourites the same 'type' whichever fandom they're in?

See, if you'd left them off you could have escaped the tag.

You know, I've pondered what makes characters be my favourite before and the solid connections seems to be I like the ones that are damaged in some way. They also tend to be the fandom 'woobies' though that's not a term I actually like. But in addition to that, each one of my favourites also has an inner strength that I really admire. So I guess the theme is people who have been broken but fought back.

Not that I'd call Chris a woobie, that doesn't fit him at all, but he does have that inner strength in spades.

Type wise. If you mean physical it's nearly always dark-haired, dark-eyed, but after that there's no real theme.

HI!
*hugs*
It's not a double one, but I figure every bit helps?

I need to go write my ten minutes - work today is super sloooow, thus is the perfect place to do my ten minutes. But I am easily distracted...

Okay I have a Sound Tracking question. Where's Bob *from*? It seems like there's all this backstory with him - stuff even before his involvement with the Used - and I'm just curious as to what that *is*.

Also - I want to hear about writing Ray POV - you don't do it very often...

From: [identity profile] turps33.livejournal.com
Hugs are always welcome. *clings on*

*cheers you on for your ten minutes* You can do it!

Bob is very much a wanderer at heart. His connection to the beat is an instinctive thing and he's able to connect fully in a way many can't. Because of that he needs to be out there, following ribbons of sound and exploring the universe. It's why as soon as he could he left home to train as a pilot. Not that he did well in that world, he only lasted a little while before the regulations became too stifling and he needed to get away.

For a while he travelled the universe, paying for his passage by doing grunt work on crafts. It's how he picked up a lot of knowledge, field med stuff and how to make meals out of scraps and most of all, how to get along with all kinds of alien races.

Eventually he ended up at the axis cluster, where he learned of Pete and spent a lot of time hanging out in bars. It's also where he met The Used. He was sitting having a drink when Bert was flung across the room, crashing down on Bob's table. Bert lay there, head back and stringy hair all over Bob's soaked lap and grinned up at him before scrambling to his feet as the bar tender strode over, his laser pointed directly at Bob and Bert. He told them both to get out, even though Bob protested he hadn't done anything, but in the end he had no choice and as soon as they got outside started yelling at Bert.

As an apology Bert took Bob back to their craft, which had been grounded for almost a week after their last pilot ran off with a luxurian call bird. And the rest was history.

Bob wasn't as damaged back then and knew within a day he was destined to be with these people, it just felt right. Two days and he was officially part of their crew and they went off to have adventures in space.

Well, I've written in Ray's POV twice, but what I found writing tight in his pov for the h/c story was he's a really good character to provide a stable overview of the others. He feels so solid to write, without any of the demons or excesses of the others. Which may be selling him a little short because he's so much more than that stable base. It would be interesting to do a more character based piece for him because the h/c was very much about survival and little else.

I really hope it heals too. She's been so frustrated on her crutches and for such a little bone it's hurting her a lot.

Confidence. I said many times that I wanted to write something long but I never thought I had the ability to do so. Plotting seemed complicated and keeping the readers interest an impossible task. Then I started Sound Tracking, which needed to go long, and I discovered I could do it. Since then I haven't been afraid of ideas that need longer stories.

It's just a shame it took so long to find that confidence.

What was the inspiration for Tints of Rainbow Hue? It's such a lovely universe but the combination of gardening and depression certainly isn't a common trope. Also, which Way is the easiest to write, Mikey or Gerard, and why?

I'm so glad the pain is gone. I hated feeling all muddle-headed on the pain killers.

I hope so too. It's sad how much trouble such a small bone can cause.

But now you have! Go you \o/

Tints came from the very first Camp Sparkle. I was sitting talking to KC at the kitchen table and somehow we started to talk about landscaping firms and how we could sparkle and bamdom cast them, and it all grew from there. If I remember rightly I started thinking how Ray would be a good gardener but that discussion never touched on depression, it was supposed to be a very light-hearted story. It was only when I actually started to write that I got the idea in my head I wanted to contrast light and dark, life and death. Which was a surprise because I'd never written to such a solid theme before.

I enjoy writing both of them, but Mikey is easiest. Mostly because when I write about him having to look on and watch Gerard's addiction issues I can relate. A lot of what he feels on those occasions are written from personal experience.

I'm so so so glad you're feeling better.

As for questions, from the space fic that never was (omg, why are you the second person that I've had to ask a question of a fic that never happened, whhhhhy?), what's the first moment where Frank validly trusts Pete?

Date: 2009-11-02 10:41 pm (UTC)
ext_1650: (Blue Pete ( tragic_icons))
From: [identity profile] turps33.livejournal.com
Man, me too.

Ah, but I have plans to do the space prequel. I just need tying down and made to do so.

It takes Frank a long time to trust Pete. At first he's angry with him, that it's Pete who saves Mikey and brings him to safety, because even though he was so badly hurt and with no way to escape his own prison, the thing that pained Frank the most was the fact he couldn't get to Mikey and pull him out of his own hell.

Frank knows feeling like that is illogical, and he reminds himself of that often. That Pete puts his own safety on the line over and over, that Mikey tries his hardest not to flinch when Pete touches him -- he doesn't succeed all the time but he tries, and that counts for a lot.

So, it's weeks and Frank's starting to feel better physically, a little anyway. He still gets horrific nightmares where he's back inside that machine and unable to move. Each night he sleeps with Mikey, holding him close, because Frank knows it's the only way Mikey can sleep. Frank does it despite hating to be still, because it reminds him of being locked up and unable to move. Each night he presses his face against Mikey's back and suffers through sweats, his limbs aching with the need to move as he imagines wires tunnelling into his spine.

It takes a while before Frank realises Pete's there at nights too. Sometimes sitting in the doorway, sometimes outside the room. Never saying anything but the need to be close is written in his face, and seeing that makes Frank furious. He knows if Pete takes a step closer he'll claw off his face, and Pete obviously knows that and leaves the room. Which is the first moment that Frank thinks, maybe. Maybe he can trust this man.

So he watches him. How he makes all Mikey's favourite food, Frank's too even though he never eats it. How he'll do anything to make Mikey feel safe.

And then one night Mikey has yet another nightmare. He's wet through with sweat, screaming himself hoarse about horrors he'll never mention in the day, and Frank's exhausted and he hurts and the bed is wet through and all Frank wants to do is cry.

Which is when Pete edges into the room and puts down an armful of warm bedding and dry sleep clothes and then backs away, telling Frank if he needs anything just comm and suddenly Frank knows that Pete can be trusted. It's like this sudden, shocking blow, that Frank's got someone on his side, someone that has no desire to take or hurt or humiliate in any way.

It's then that Frank asks if Pete will help change the bed and help him get Mikey changed and hopes Pete knows how much that means. Of course he does.
